Mari Lwyd

Mari is a ghostly white horse skull festooned with bells and ribbons who ventures door to door with her entourage around Christmas time seeking hospitality and maybe a few drinks, if the hosts are willing.

She greets you with a song, snapping her jaws together as she finishes each verse, and after the song is over it’s time for both of you to engage in the ‘pwnco’, an improvised rhyming battle of wits. If Mari wins, she gets to come inside.

She may wreak a little havoc - running around and scaring the children - but when she leaves she takes all the bad luck with her, leaving you to enjoy a happy new year.
